Cracking Down on Gun Violence in Broward

It’s a fact, not an opinion, that our nation has a serious gun violence problem. The violence is perpetrated on our streets and schools, in our homes and churches, against others and overwhelmingly, against ourselves.

At Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018 and before that at Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale Airport in 2017 Broward County saw deadly examples of why enforcement of our national and state firearms laws is so important.

As your Sheriff, Broward Sheriff’s Office will enforce the fairly strict gun laws already on the books. By taking existing gun laws seriously, we show that we are dedicated to protecting Broward residents and visitors from the specter of firearms abuse.

These law enforcement efforts include

  • Supporting mandatory background checks
  • Enforcing Florida’s “red flag” laws with adequate due process so that domestic abusers and bullies don’t stalk their victims with firearms
  • Cracking down on so-called “straw purchases” where people buy guns for criminals
  • Enforcing our Statewide ban on bump stocks
  • Investigating reports of people with mental health issues being in possession of firearms
  • Taking threats and perceived threats of violence seriously by investigating and neutralizing these armed threats to our schools, churches, streets and ports

At Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018 and before that at Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale Airport in 2017 Broward County saw deadly examples of why enforcement of our national and state firearms laws is so important.

  • Training our deputies and First Responders to be courageous while ensuring they have the means, backup and equipment to do their jobs to the full extent of their abilities
  • Working with Grassroots organizations to give at-risk youth alternatives to gang activities
  • Deploying accredited mental health professionals as sworn officers with a view to guiding those suffering from depression and mental health disorders towards resources to help them manage their conditions

With the above steps taken we avoid the pitfalls that lead to many of our past gun-related tragedies.  All of this can be done while respecting the 2nd Amendment rights of the many legally armed citizens, residents and visitors in Broward County.

The results would be a Broward County where people can safely live, work, study and visit.
